BBC competition gives young composers the chance to have their music performed at the Proms

The BBC Proms Inspire competition is now open for entries, giving young composers the chance to have their music performed by professionals at the BBC Proms as well as broadcast on Radio 3.

Now in its twentieth year, the BBC Proms Inspire scheme provides 12-18 year olds with a friendly environment to share ideas, meet like-minded composers and develop their musical creativity, while working alongside some of the UK’s top composers and musicians.

As well as the Proms performance and Radio play, winners also receive a BBC commission for a high-profile performance and are mentored throughout the process by a professional composer.

“We are looking for music that is original, unique and inspiring. It can be completely innovative or can use the music and ideas of the past to inspire new and exciting pieces of music. There are no restrictions on the type of music you can enter – whatever your style and inspiration, we want to hear it,” said the BBC.

Kerry Andrew, a 2018 Inspire Competition judge, commented: “BBC Inspire is a brilliant scheme which invites young composers of all ages and abilities to get involved, no matter what genre or genres you write in. There are great workshop days with professional musicians at the top of their game, as well as the BBC Proms Inspire Competition. In my two years’ judging the competition, I’ve been hugely impressed by the range and excellent standard of the entries.”

The 2018 Inspire Competition is now open for entries until 5pm, Thursday 24th May 2018.
